Please Utilize the special Bear Proof Trash Cans
Please use the lockable trash cages at the cabin and make sure the carabiner is secured every time you handle trash. Black bears in the Smoky Mountains have an excellent sense of smell and quickly learn to associate human food and scented items with easy meals; properly closed, bear‑resistant trash cages prevent bears and other wildlife from accessing garbage, which keeps both guests and animals safer. The National Park Service emphasizes that food and garbage attract bears, lead to habituation, and often result in property damage or the animal being removed or euthanized—so using the cages as intended directly reduces those risks.
If the trash cans are full when you leave, you may leave tied trash bags inside the cabin rather than leaving them outside unsecured. Also avoid leaving any food, drinks, garbage, coolers, toiletries, or scented items in vehicles parked in front of the cabins—bears will investigate cars and can break windows or doors to reach smells. Thank you for securing the carabiner and following these guidelines; doing so helps protect our guests, the cabin, and the local bear population.
Recycling
Unfortunately, we don’t provide separate recycling bins. Our cleaners, who take the trash, cannot keep the two separate.
