A little orientation goes a long way. None of this is meant to alarm you — it's just the practical stuff worth knowing so everyone stays comfortable and safe up here on the mountain.
Every bedroom has an approved portable window escape ladder (a county fire-safety requirement). It hooks over the window sill and unrolls down the outside wall — for use only if your normal exit is blocked by smoke or fire. When you arrive, take a moment to notice which window it's by and where it's stored.
Detectors are installed throughout for your safety — please don't tamper with, disable, or remove them. If an alarm sounds, evacuate immediately and call 911 if needed. If one chirps intermittently (low battery), let us know and we'll take care of it.
Keep stairways clear and well-lit, use the handrails, and supervise little ones. Avoid carrying loads that block your view. Notice a loose tread or wobbly handrail? Tell us so we can fix it.
Never leave the oven, stove, or any space heater unattended while it's on, and assume cooktop and oven surfaces are hot. Keep flammables (paper towels, dishcloths, aerosols) away from heat, and double-check the controls are off after cooking.
Operate the fireplaces only with the wall switch — never try to light the pilot or service the unit yourself. Keep the glass and hearth clear of blankets, paper, and décor, and don't put seating or toys right in front of it: the glass stays hot even after the flame is off. Supervise children and pets nearby. Smell gas? Turn it off if safe, leave, and call 911 and the gas company from outside.
The decks are for soaking up the view — not for climbing. Please don't sit, stand, or lean on the railings or set heavy items on them, supervise children out there, and keep gatherings within the cabin's occupancy limit. Spot a loose board or railing? Report it right away.
There's a flashlight and emergency kit provided — please use those rather than candles. Keep exits clear; in the event of smoke, stay low, cover your nose and mouth, and get out quickly.
