The Smokies reinvent themselves every few months, so the “best” thing to do depends on when you're here. A quick guide to what's special each season — and see Road & seasons for what the weather's like.
Spring (March–May)
Wildflowers — the park is the “wildflower national park”; April–May is peak (Porters Creek is a favorite).
Waterfalls at full roar from snowmelt and spring rain.
Synchronous fireflies at Elkmont — a rare natural light show in late May/early June (access by NPS lottery).
Dollywood's Flower & Food Festival and the spring 40th-anniversary shows.
Summer (June–August)
Tubing and swimming holes on the Little River in Townsend — the classic hot-day move.
Dollywood's Splash Country and Summer Celebration drone shows after dark.
Long daylight for hikes — start early to beat the heat and the crowds.
Fall (September–November)
Leaf season — late September up high through late October in the valleys; spectacular (and the busiest time, so book early).
Dollywood's Harvest Festival and the Great Pumpkin LumiNights.
Crisp, clear days — the best long-range views of the year.
Winter (December–February)
Smoky Mountain Christmas at Dollywood and millions of lights up and down the Parkway (Winterfest).
Bare-tree views you can't see any other season, and a real shot at snow on the high peaks.
Cozy nights by the fireplace and in the hot tub — arguably the best season at the cabin.
