While the bright lights of Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg are fun for a day, our hearts belong to the “Peaceful Side of the Smokies.” We'd take the rustle of leaves over the hustle of the Parkway any day. This slow pace isn't for everyone — if you want neon and roller coasters, our list might feel a little quiet — but if a scenic drive where you see more bears than brake lights sounds good, you're our kind of guest. Here are the local gems where we go to actually breathe.
Where we eat (Townsend)
Peaceful Side Social — our go-to: relaxed vibe, great craft beer, and a killer “Half-Baked” chicken or pizza. Exactly as the name promises.
The Abbey — a former wedding chapel turned riverside hangout; a beer and a pretzel while the Little River drifts by.
Dancing Bear Appalachian Bistro — special-occasion, farm-to-table, splurge-worthy and so worth it. We always end the night by the fire making the free s'mores.
Burger Master Drive-In — a no-frills local staple for 50+ years; perfect after a day of exploring.
What we do — avoiding the crowds
The Foothills Parkway — forget the traffic jams; this drive has some of the most spectacular, unobstructed mountain views around. (~15–20 min)
Spruce Flats Falls — tucked behind the Tremont Institute, a short, punchy waterfall hike most tourists miss. See Hiking trails.
Metcalf Bottoms — a riverside picnic, then a stroll to the historic Walker Sisters cabin or Little Greenbrier Schoolhouse.
Tuckaleechee Caverns — head underground to escape the heat and the crowds at “the greatest site under the Smokies.”
The “local” way
Cades Cove at sunrise — the park's most popular loop, kept peaceful by going as early as humanly possible, or on a vehicle-free Wednesday (May–Sept) when you can bike or walk it car-free. The best way to spot bears and deer without the traffic-jam feel.
Goats on the Roof — yes, it sounds like a tourist trap, but we love it: live goats on the roof (feed them via the “goat-cycle”) plus a mountain coaster, right on Wears Valley Road and a little calmer than the Parkway spots.
This is the Smokies the way we love them. Give one a try and tell us what you think — we're always comparing notes.
