Right in Pigeon Forge, Dollywood is consistently ranked among the best theme parks in the world — and it's about 25–30 minutes from the cabin. It's the rare park that nails everything: world-class roller coasters, genuinely good live music, real Appalachian craftspeople, Southern food worth the trip on its own, and Dolly Parton's warm fingerprints on all of it. Plan on a full day (or two).
The park opened in 1986 when Dolly partnered with the Herschend family on the site of an older attraction, and it's been growing ever since — now sprawling over 150+ acres of wooded hillside. 2026 marks Dollywood's 40th anniversary, with new shows and the debut of NightFlight Expedition, a first-of-its-kind all-indoor adventure coaster that soars over a re-imagined Smokies.
Buy tickets online ahead of time and aim to arrive at opening — the popular coasters build long lines by midday. A season pass can pay for itself in just two visits.
10 things not to miss
Lightning Rod — a lightning-fast launch coaster down the mountain; one of the park's signature thrills.
Wild Eagle — the country's first “wing” coaster, with your feet dangling out over the ridge.
Big Bear Mountain — the park's longest coaster (2023): a triple-launch family ride with on-board audio. Great for first-timers.
NightFlight Expedition — the brand-new 2026 indoor adventure coaster; story, scenery, and moderate thrills for all ages.
Thunderhead — a beloved wooden coaster that's all airtime and rattle.
FireChaser Express — a family launch coaster that runs forward and backward; kids love it.
Tennessee Tornado & Mystery Mine — a smooth looping classic and a dark, twisty indoor-outdoor thriller.
The Grist Mill — get the famous cinnamon bread (it lives up to the hype) and watch it made.
Craftsman's Valley — blacksmiths, glassblowers, candle-makers, and more — real artisans at work.
Live shows & music — bluegrass, gospel, and big stage productions all day; grab a schedule when you arrive.
5 things most visitors miss
Wings of America eagle sanctuary — the country's largest group of non-releasable bald eagles, with a daily birds-of-prey show.
The Dollywood Express — a real coal-fired steam train through the back hills; a relaxing break for all ages.
Dolly's Tennessee Mountain Home & museum — a replica of her childhood home and stories from her life; more moving than you'd expect.
The seasonal festivals — Flower & Food (spring), Summer Celebration's drone shows, the Harvest Festival's Great Pumpkin LumiNights (fall), and Smoky Mountain Christmas (millions of lights).
Dollywood's Splash Country — the separate water park next door; a lifesaver on a hot summer day (seasonal, separate ticket).
Hungry beyond the cinnamon bread? Skillet meals, hand-dipped corn dogs, and cinnamon-roasted nuts are all local legends. Come hungry.
Note: Dolly Parton's Stampede and Pirates Voyage dinner shows are separate venues in Pigeon Forge (not inside the park) — both a blast; see Things to do.
